Drawing-board Style Typography Tutorial.

This is what we are aiming for;

Final Result

Through-out this tutorial you will learn how to stylise simple block letters into a stunning drawing-board style typography effect.

Adobe Illustrator is necessary.

Now, let’s begin!

First open up a new document in Illustrator, an A4 landscape sized RGB-mode document should be fine.
Now type out a word of your choice, in my case DAWSON, preferably in capital letters. I used the font Futura Bold, but you can use any font, but try to keep it bold.

Give the font no fill but a light blue stroke of 1 pixel with a width variation selected as below.

Duplicate the text by holding Alt and dragging it out, then fill the duplicate text with the same blue as used in the stroke text; but take off any strokes on this duplicate text.

Now, while selecting the text with the fill, Go to Effect>Stylise>Scribble…
You can mess around with the options, but here are the options I used.

Now, move the texts directly on top of one another.
Use the pen tool to create lines around the bottom left edge of your text, as shown below, using the stroke settings also shown below.

Mess around with the Pen Tool and try to create some more strokes similar to the image below; try to vary the stroke widths and width profiles to create a more complex image.

Finally, we can add some secondary text. I used the word ‘GRAPHICS’ and used Futura Regular for the font type, I also spread the space between each letter out. Use similar settings to the below image.

And, change the colour to a light grey, and Well Done!
You should have a result similar to mine.
